Betsey Bayless, Chief Executive Officer
With a distinguished career in public service, Betsey Bayless began her latest professional endeavor in September 2005 when she was named Chief Executive Officer of Maricopa Integrated Health System, an independent health care district approved by voters in 2003 and governed by a five-member Board of Directors.
The cornerstone of the system is Maricopa Medical Center, a 450-bed major teaching hospital with a history dating back more than 100 years. Best known for its critical care services, the hospital offers Level One trauma and intensive care for adults, babies and children. Additionally, the nation's second largest burn treatment facility, the Arizona Burn Center, is located on the main hospital campus and treats more than 800 patients per year. Eleven family health care centers located throughout the Valley, provide primary and specialty care.
Ms. Bayless' career of public service began as an intern in the State Personnel Department. Most recently, from 1997 through 2002, Ms. Bayless served as Arizona's 17th Secretary of State. In that capacity, Ms. Bayless focused on increasing voter registration and participation, implementing electronic government and making government more efficient and customer friendly.
Previously, Ms. Bayless was a member of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, where she served two terms as Board chair. Her extensive State government career includes serving as the director of the Arizona Department of Administration, acting director of the Arizona Department of Revenue, and assistant director of the Arizona Board of Regents.
Ms. Bayless has worked in the securities industry as an investment banker and as a stockbroker. A third-generation, Spanish-speaking Arizonan, Ms. Bayless earned her Bachelor's degree in Latin American Studies and Spanish from the University of Arizona. Her graduate degrees include a Master's in Public Administration from Arizona State University and an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Arizona.
Active in community service, Ms. Bayless was the recipient of the 2005 Valley Leadership Woman of the Year Award. She is a member of Childhelp Arizona's Board of Directors, the Arizona Community Foundation Board of Directors, the University of Arizona's College of Business and Public Administration National Board, TGen Board of Directors, Arizona State University West's Advisory Board, and the Campaign Finance Institute Board of Directors.
