Obstetrics and Gynecology

 To Apply: 

VSAS: Must apply through VSAS if your school uses it. All of the below documents must be completed or downloaded through VSAS when you apply.

Paper Application: Clerkship Application-Only if your school does not use VSAS. All of the below documents must be submitted with the application before it can be approved.

NOTE: Applications must be submitted 80 days in advance

  • Cover letter addressed to Dr. Patricia Graham (include reason and expectations of the rotations)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Copy of School ID, 
  • Passport or state issued ID card
  • Proof of personnel health insurance.
  • Acknowledgement of Confidentiality
  • Immunization Record (Immunization form- Must use our immunization form if your School does not have one or if you have separate records for you immunizations) 
    • MMR
    • Hep B
    • Varicella
    • Tetanus (Must be within 10 years of your rotation date).
    • TB (Must be within 12 months of your rotation date).
  • Letter from Medical School Dean stating approval of this rotation and class rank (must include dates of requested rotation)
  • Transcripts
  • Certificate of Liability for $1,000,000/$3,000,000 from the school or a letter from the school stating that the school is self- insured and the student is covered under that self-insurance
  • Background Check (Background Check Form and Link -If Medical School is unable to provide written verification then MIHS Online Background Check is required)
  • Verification of HIPAA Training (if needed complete and submit the Online HIPAA Training certificate)
  • Evaluation Tool from School
  • USMLE / COMLEX / ECFMG Scores Part 1 & 2

Preparation for Practice 

Course:
OB G 810 Ae

Prerequisites: Obstetrics & Gynecology Core Clerkship, USMLE or COMPLEX
This course is directly supervised by University of Arizona College of Medicine Faculty. 

Goals: 
This program in Obstetrics & Gynecology is designed to further enhance the basic skills learned in the Core Obstetrics and Gynecology Clerkship. The students will obtain a broad experience, which is designed, not only to enhance the student's ability to care for the female patient, but also should be advantageous in assisting his/her personal delineation of career goals. 

Format: 
An in-depth clinical experience in Obstetrics & Gynecology along with scheduled weekly conferences. The students will be an integral part of the healthcare team with the residents, allied health professionals and faculty on daily rounds, direct patient care, and didactic conferences. As part of the learning experience, night call is an important part of the rotation, and will offer an experience where the student may further develop their diagnostic and patient management skills.

Evaluation Methods: 
The student will be evaluated in writing by the faculty and housestaff utilizing direct observations. The student will also have the opportunity to discuss the rotation throughout the time of their experience will include student evaluation of the course. 

Gynecologic Surgery

Course:

Prerequisites: Obstetrics & Gynecology Core Clerkship, USMLE or COMPLEX 
This course is directly supervised by University of Arizona College of Medicine Faculty. 

Goals: 
To expand knowledge in the field of gynecologic oncology and enhance basic skills in surgical anatomy. 

Format: 
The clerkship will be balanced with time spent in the operating room, didactic conferences, outpatient clinics and private office setting. All activities of the student will be under the supervision of the resident staff and full-time faculty.
 
Arrangements for this elective must be made with Clerkship Coordinator (602) 344-5444.

Evaluation Methods:
 
Direct observation by faculty physicians and housestaff with written evaluations discussed with the medical student. The medical student evaluates the faculty, housestaff and rotation experience.

Maternal Fetal Medicine

Prerequisites: Obstetrics & Gynecology Core Clerkship, USMLE or COMPLEX
This course is directly supervised by University of Arizona College of Medicine Faculty.

Goals: 

To expand knowledge in the field of maternal fetal medicine and expose students to high risk and serious complications in the obstetric population. Medical student will become involved in the diagnosis and management of at-risk patients; and participate as an active member of the maternal fetal management team.

Format: 

The clerkship will be balanced with time spent in the antenatal testing center, ultrasound and prenatal diagnosis, didactic conferences and morning rounds with the high risk obstetrics team. In addition, the student will observe in the evaluation and performance of the office high risk procedures on patients assigned to the maternal fetal management team. All activities of the student will be under the supervision of the resident staff and full-time faculty.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Research 

Maricopa Medical Center, Phoenix 
Course: OB G 800 Ae

Prerequisites: Obstetrics & Gynecology Core Clerkship, USMLE or COMPLEX.
This course is directly supervised by University of Arizona College of Medicine Faculty 

Goals:
Become familiar with clinical research methods in obstetrics and gynecology. This will include a review of clinical epidemiology biostatistics and literature review techniques. Involvement with either ongoing research projects or the design of a new project will be an integral part of the course. 

Format: 
The format will include tutorial sessions, self-directed readings and participation in ongoing research projects. This may involve evaluating patients for eligibility in clinical trials. Participants may also elect to be involved part-time, with clinical responsibilities including labor and delivery.

Evaluation Methods:
 
A one-page summary of activities will be due from the student at the conclusion of the rotation. The student will be evaluated in writing by the faculty utilizing direct observation. The evaluation will be reviewed with the student. The medical student evaluates the faculty, housestaff and rotation experience.

Specialty Ambulatory Clinics in Ob/Gyn

Prerequisites: Obstetrics & Gynecology Core Clerkship, USMLE or COMPLEX
This course is directly supervised by University of Arizona College of Medicine Faculty.

Goals: 

Exposure to different specialty ambulatory clinics (refugee, teen, internatal, gynecologic ultrasound, substance abuse, reproductive endocrinology).
Format: 

Outpatient clinic rounds; Readings provided by attending of the different clinics, no overnight call requirement; 2-4 didactic conferences on Fridays.

Evaluation Methods: 
 
A written evaluation of student performance in both clinical settings will be provided by the attending staff. Evaluations will include assessment of knowledge base, knowledge acquisition and clinical performance. Evaluations will be reviewed with the student. Written evaluation of the rotation by the student will be requested so that the elective can be improved.
