Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology at MIHS. We are pleased to offer an in-depth and hands-on experience in the field of anesthesiology. You will work closely with anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetics, and will see a wide variety of anesthetic techniques and surgical procedures. We specialize in burn and trauma surgery, as well as ENT, GYN, thoracic and vascular, pediatrics, high risk obstetrics and plastic surgery. We also provide sedation services throughout the hospital and are the experts in management of difficult airways.

Students will understand the components of pre-anesthetic consultation and risk stratification of patients prior to surgery and anesthesia. They will discuss goals of pre-operative medical optimization and identify anatomical features that may contribute to a difficult airway. Students will also be expected to understand the ASA’s difficult airway algorithm and common monitors used during anesthesia.
We expose students to a variety of anesthetic techniques including monitored anesthesia care, general anesthesia, neuraxial anesthesia and regional anesthesia.
We make sure our students complete this rotation with an understanding of:
- Common cardiovascular medications utilized during anesthesia
- Common complications in the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative phases
- Common physiologic changes that occur while patients are under anesthesia
- How and why the anesthetic plan is modified based on each patient’s medical conditions
- Pharmacology of commonly used anesthetic agents, sedatives and narcotics
- The ways a surgical procedure can impact the anesthetic and vice versa.
Students will acquire the following hands-on skills:
- Arterial line placement and monitoring
- Become familiar with advanced airway equipment and techniques
- Central venous access
- Direct laryngoscopy and endotracheal tube placement
- LMA placement
- Mask ventilation
- Oral and nasal airway placement
- Peripheral IV access
