The Department of Family and Community Medicine (Family Medicine) offers three electives:  Complementary Alternative Medicine , Family Medicine Ambulatory, and Family Medicine Subinternship .

Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM)

Faculty - Dr. A. Kuruvilla (Course Coordinator: Theresa Alvarez 602 344-5544, Directly supervised/Patient care. Prior approval. Maximum enrollment of 2)

Prerequisites - Completion of third-year courses. Medical students must have consent of Dr. Abraham Kuruvilla before registering.

Goals - To provide an opportunity to have a reasonable knowledge of CAM. 2. To expose varieties of CAM interventions like Acupuncture, Homeopathy, and Herbs, etc. 3. To familiarize with cases that could be referred to CAM consultants.

Objectives - Demonstration of patient management using CAM modalities. 2. The common modalities are Acupuncture, Homeopathy, Herbs, Naturopathy. 3. The sites of the rotation are Guadalupe Family Health Center and Seventh Ave Family Health Center in Phoenix.

Format - A glossary of all available therapies in CAM with brief explanations. 2. Reading manuals of many CAM modalities. 3. Lectures in Acupuncture, Homeopathy, and Ayurveda. 4. Attending multidisciplinary CAM case management conferences.

Evaluation Methods - Direct observation by preceptors. Students will be evaluated on knowledge, clinical skills and application of knowledge. Standard College of Medicine evaluation forms issued by the College of Medicine will be used.

Family Medicine Ambulatory

Length of Time - 4 wks only

Prerequisites - Completion of third-year courses. Medical students must have consent of Dr. Greg Lewis before registering.

Goals - To provide a broad range of ambulatory-care clinical experiences including: prenatal/postnatal obstetrics, pediatrics, adult medicine and geriatrics.

Format - This course will be taught in community-oriented health care centers in predominately indigent and ethnic minority communities. Students will be supervised by residency-trained, board-certified attending Family Physicians. Students may elect to do a project in a community health-related problem. Selected readings determined by faculty.

Evaluation Methods - Direct observation by preceptors. Students will be evaluated on knowledge, clinical skills and application of knowledge. Standard College of Medicine evaluation forms issued by the College of Medicine will be used.

Family Medicine Subinternship

Faculty - Dr. John Andazola (Coordinator: Raymond Kilpatrick 602-344-5426)

Length of Time - 4 wks only

Offered - Year round

Prerequisites - Fourth-year medical students. Medical students must have consent of Dr. Carlos Frias before registering.

Goals - To provide the senior medical student exposure to a full spectrum in-patient and out-patient Family Medicine from newborn nursery to adult intensive care to ambulatory care.

Format - The medical student will be an active member of the Family Medicine Ward team functioning as a subintern. Direct supervision is provided by Family Medicine faculty. The subintern will have the opportunity to make daily rounds on labor and delivery, the medical floor and the ICU staffed by Family Medicine physicians. The student will also be exposed to the Family Medicine maternity service with the opportunity for participation in deliveries and C-sections. Lastly an exposure to ambulatory clinic will be provided for a complete exposure to full spectrum Family Medicine.

Evaluation Methods - Direct observation by faculty physicians midway through and upon completion of the rotation. The medical student performs written evaluation of the faculty.
