MIHS Aims to Inform Women, Girls About HIV / AIDS

March 7, 2006 - Arizona Department of Health Services statistics indicate that the number of women living with HIV/AIDS in Maricopa County has doubled since 1996.

This sobering fact demonstrates the need for continued HIV/AIDS educational efforts. From 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Friday, March 10 at Phoenix College (1202 W. Thomas Rd.) MIHS will welcome the community to Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

National speaker and author River Huston will discuss the challenges she faces living with HIV. In addition to Ms. Huston's moving story, six local HIV/AIDS experts will discuss virtually every aspect of the disease. Some topics to be addressed include disease prevention, where and how to get tested and the five biggest HIV/AIDS myths among others.

Free confidential HIV rapid testing and counseling will also be available.

Our goal is to raise awareness while providing women and girls with an arsenal of information to fight this disease, said Debra Welborn, MIHS Title IV program coordinator. This promises to be a fun, informative day.
