Maricopa Integrated Health System to Host Inaugural Health Career Awareness Day
Committed to educating young people, Maricopa Integrated Health System invites students and parents to participate in a day of learning, fun - May 4, 2006
Organizers of the inaugural Health Career Awareness Day know that a profound journey begins with a single step. That's why Maricopa Integrated Health System — the Valley's largest teaching hospital — will host Health Career Awareness Day, a half-day event designed to give high school students a road map they can use to chart their career path. Maricopa Integrated Health System realizes that the high school student of today, is the physician or nurse of tomorrow.
Geared toward students interested in medical and nursing careers, the event will outline educational requirements for medical and nursing school respectively. One of the things that makes this program unique is the audience. All attendees must be accompanied by a parent.
"Parents play a critical role in the academic success of their children," said Sandra Munoz, event organizer. "An informed and encouraging parent makes all the difference."
The opening session is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 6 in Administration Building on the campus of Maricopa Integrated Health System (2601 E. Roosevelt St., Phoenix).
Attendees will hear testimonials from doctors and nurses about the challenges they faced as they aspired toward higher goals.
Dr. Norberto Adame, associate chairman, Department of Emergency Medicine at Maricopa Medical Center, will discuss his journey form a rural farming community in Southern Texas to the Boston University School of Medicine. As a boy, Dr. Adame helped his grandfather pick cotton. Dr. Adame credits his grandfather with encouraging him to strive toward excellence in the classroom. Today, Dr. Adame is committed to offering students the same encouragement he received as a child.
