Be proud of hospital

The Family of Frances Mickey
June 1, 2007

On May 9, our mother and sister, Frances Mickey, had a massive stroke while en route from Tucson to Phoenix. Her sister, Katherine White, rushed her to the nearest hospital - Maricopa Medical Center (part of the Maricopa Integrated Health System), previously known as Maricopa County Hospital.

When we, Frances' family, learned where she had been taken, we immediately assumed that, being a county hospital, it was poor quality and we should arrange to transfer her to a higher-quality facility. What we learned was that she was at the best hospital in the area for the kind of care she needed. Maricopa Integrated Health System has one of the best trauma units in the nation.

What we also learned was that the personnel at Maricopa are outstanding. The physicians, ICU nurses and social workers who cared for Frances and assisted us are all consummate professionals with tremendous expertise and seemingly unlimited compassion and commitment to their patients.

We underestimated this wonderful organization because we had a stereotype of a county hospital. We want the citizens of Phoenix to know that MIHS is an outstanding medical facility that people in the Valley should take great pride in claiming.
