Sun City West resident Dr. Gerald Cuendet has been named chairman of the Maricopa Integrated Health System Governing Board.

A former superintendent of the Deer Valley Unified School District, Dr. Cuendet brings impressive experience and knowledge to his new position, said Michael Cowley, outgoing board chairman. The board unanimously selected Cuendet to replace Cowley.

“Our board is fortunate to have had Dr. Cuendet as a stalwart member since its earliest days. He has played an important role in helping to build and steer the region’s only public integrated health system,” said Mr. Cowley. “His broad experience in leadership positions makes him ideally suited to lead the Maricopa Integrated Health System governing board.”

Dr. Cuendet was first chosen by voters to serve on the governing board in 2004, when the special health care district was created. Dr. Cuendet represents District Four, which includes Sun City, Sun City West, Youngtown, Surprise, Litchfield Park, Goodyear, Peoria, Glendale and Wickenburg.

“In my years with MIHS, I have witnessed the evolution of one of the state’s premier public health systems,” said Dr. Cuendet. “My goal is to help MIHS become a nationally recognized leader in community health while remaining accountable to the residents of Maricopa County.”

Dr. Cuendet also is a former superintendent of the Phoenix Elementary School District.
