Bil Bruno of Chandler today was named chairman of the Maricopa Integrated Health System Governing Board, which oversees Maricopa County’s only public health system.

Bruno, an insurance professional, will lead the five member board. Susan Gerard, former state health director, today was elected vice chairman.

Bruno has served on the MIHS Board since Maricopa County voters created the special health care district to rescue the financially troubled Maricopa Medical Center. He was instrumental in leading a financial turnaround of the hospital and 11 neighborhood clinics that provide vital services to the entire community.

Gerard is one of the nation’s leading experts in health care systems. During her 16 years in the Legislature, she chaired the House and Senate health committees and authored and passed major health care legislation.

CEO Betsey Bayless said, “Bil Bruno and Susan Gerard bring a wealth of experience and expertise that will help us reach our goal of becoming a national leader in community health. Our mission is to offer comprehensive and safe care to all those who live in Maricopa County, and Bil and Susan are ideally suited to ensure we maintain our mission while achieving the highest quality standards in patient care.”

In addition to Bruno, four new members of the MIHS Board were sworn in today. Besides Gerard, the new members are Greg Patterson of Scottsdale, Elbert “Bick” Bicknell of Wickenberg, and Alice Lara of Phoenix.
