Dr. Coonrod is the Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Maricopa Integrated Health System in Phoenix, Arizona and is an Associate Professor at the University of Arizona’sCollege of Medicine. Dr. Coonrod received his undergraduate degree at Seattle Pacific University and then pursued a medical degree along with a master’s degree in public health at the University of Washington. Dr. Coonrod completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Arizona where he actively practices as a clinician, researcher, educator, and advocate to victims of domesticviolence (DV) through his community health work.
Dr. Coonrod’s longstanding commitment to public health in the Maricopa County community is evidenced by his leadership in public programs and funded grants. Several of these key leadership roles include: (1) Medical Director for the Well Woman Healthcheck Program, a program that provides free cancer screening to women including breast exams, mammograms, pelvic exams, and pap tests; (2) Member of the Phoenix Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team, a team whose mission is to study the deaths of DV to better understand and make improvements to the treatment and prevention of DV cases; and (3) Principal Investigator on a grant that launched a hospital-wide DV advocacy program offering education and training to victims of DV as well as training of clinicians to recognize DV and offer referral services to victims. (4) Dr. Coonrod is also interested in preconception care. He is the principle investigator on a grant with the March of Dimes to create an internatal clinic providing care for women between pregnancies who have experienced an adverse pregnancy outcome. (5) He is also an investigator on the Family Sanas Grant which is funded to improve compliance with the post partum visit. In addition to his public health work, Dr. Coonrod’s other research interests include the effects of Cesarean deliveries, the effects of induction of labor, and the standardized nulliparous patient as a measure of obstetric quality.
Dr. Coonrod holds affiliations in multiple organizations, including the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Public Health Association, the Society of Epidemiologic Research, the Society of Pediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology, and the CDC Clinical Workgroup on Preconception Health Care. Dr. Coonrod has authored dozens of journal articles and has been honored with awards throughout the span of his career from his graduate studies to a recent listing in “The Guide to America’s Top Obstetrician Gynecologists”.
Dr. Coonrod resides in Phoenix with his wife and two daughters. He speaks English, Spanish, and French.
