Family Violence Awareness Month

Project Description: Activities during the month of October to increase awareness of domestic violence. Began as brown bag presentations, activities have grown to include a shelter drive, community resources, programs, and an award ceremony.

Domestic Violence Resource Materials

Project Description: Shoe cards and holders are stocked throughout MIHS and other requesting agencies. Coordination of the distribution of child safety plans.

Maricopa Association of Governments Domestic Violence Hospital Work Group

 

Lead / Contact(s): Jennifer Casaletto, Chairman

Coordinating Staff: Dena Salter

Project Description:Countywide effort to develop and operationalize domestic violence recommendations for the health care community. Out of this effort has come a recommendation for a program of annual hospital training. Distribution of 50 kits is funded by SLHI.

Medical Provider Education

Project Description: As new interns rotate through the OB/GYN service at MIHS, they are given a brief orientation on DV screening. Other trainings take place at grand rounds, other offices and other hospitals.

Medical Student Family Violence Education

Project Description: Monthly sessions to educate medical students rotating through the OB/GYN about family violence, how to screen, and what to do when a patient discloses. Training occurs at the U of A Phoenix campus and is arranged through the MIHS/St. Joseph’s residency program.

New Intern Orientation Family Violence Education

Project Description: This has been a research project in the past, but the education is done whether data is collected or not. A presentation is delivered, resources provided, and social work procedures are discussed. New intern orientations are facilitated across the state. These occur each year in June at the beginning of the academic year for residents.

Pediatric Provider Education

Project Description: Monthly small group and yearly large session continuing medical education to pediatric providers in training and in practice on addressing domestic violence as child abuse prevention.
