Orthopedics

Faculty: Kurtis Staples, MD, Bryan Pimlott, MD, Eli Swanson, MD
Length: 1 month rotation (4 weeks maximum length)
Offered: Year round
Maximum: 1 student per rotation

Requirements

Medical Student Electives
Thank you for your interest in the clinical clerkships available for medical students in the Department of Orthopedics at Maricopa Medical Center. The rotation duration is a 1 month rotation per academic year.

Goals
The 4th year medical student rotation is designed to provide an in-depth exposure to Orthopedic Surgery at Maricopa Integrated Health System. The curriculum will emphasize the evaluation and management of common sprains, fractures and dislocations, with a focus on the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of acute orthopedic conditions. Students will be involved in patient care beginning in the emergency department and have experiences of continual care through the hospitalization, operating theater and outpatient clinics. Clinical experiences will include acute evaluation of musculoskeletal trauma and acute pain syndromes.

A series of weekly didactic sessions will focus on basic orthopedic knowledge. Students will participate in a weekly x-ray conference. Students will have the opportunity to participate in overnight call. Additional opportunities for interpretation of radiographs, aspiration and injection of joints, splinting and casting will be available.

Format
Students will rotate through Maricopa Integrated Health System. In clinic, students will be expected to see patients, present to the attending, formulate a differential diagnosis, and recommend tests to narrow the diagnosis list, and discuss the case. Students are expected to select one case in which they have been involved and present a PowerPoint slide presentation on that patient and their orthopedic condition.

Evaluation Methods
Students are evaluated according to their program and RRC requirements. Clinical case logs must be maintained in accordance with the school/program and reviewed prior to departing at the end of an assigned rotation. If your school/program does not provide an evaluation tool, we will use our own.
